A Good Questionnaire Changes How You Play

A character questionnaire is useful when the answers affect a scene. Knowing a favorite color may be pleasant; knowing what your character refuses to ask for can shape every conversation. Use this list to discover decisions, not to complete homework.

Answer ten questions first. Play a scene, notice what is still unclear, and return for another five. A smaller set of honest answers creates a stronger character than fifty answers invented only to fill boxes.

Identity and First Impressions

1. What does your character want strangers to assume about them?
2. What detail immediately contradicts that impression?
3. Which part of their identity do they state proudly?
4. Which part do they explain differently depending on the audience?
5. What do they notice first when entering an unfamiliar place?
6. What makes them feel visibly out of place?
7. What harmless question do they dislike answering?
8. What possession would another person wrongly use to judge them?

Wants, Needs, and Pressure

9. What do they want before the end of this week?
10. What deeper need are they mistaking for that goal?
11. What price will they willingly pay?
12. What price do they insist they will never pay?
13. What would make them abandon the plan?
14. Who benefits if they succeed?
15. Who quietly benefits if they fail?
16. What deadline makes waiting impossible?

Relationships and Trust

17. Whose approval still matters more than they admit?
18. What kind of person earns their trust too quickly?
19. What act of care do they understand immediately?
20. What act of care do they often misread?
21. Who can ask them for a favor they would deny anyone else?
22. What debt do they believe can never be repaid?
23. Which relationship would they protect with a lie?
24. What boundary becomes firm when they feel close to someone?

Conflict and Choice

25. How do they behave when they know they are wrong?
26. What insult works because it contains some truth?
27. Do they attack the problem, escape it, negotiate, or freeze?
28. What rule do they obey even when nobody is watching?
29. What rule do they break without guilt?
30. What would make them betray an ally?
31. What victory would feel like a defeat?
32. What do they do immediately after losing control?

Voice and Everyday Behavior

33. What do they say instead of “I need help”?
34. When do their sentences become shorter?
35. What subject makes them talk too much?
36. What emotion do they hide with humor, silence, or anger?
37. What routine restores their sense of control?
38. What tiny inconvenience tests their patience?
39. How do they treat someone who cannot help them?
40. What promise do they make too casually?

Secrets, Change, and Hooks

41. What fact are they hiding, and what visible behavior does hiding create?
42. What belief would be painful to surrender?
43. What evidence could change that belief?
44. Who knows a version of their past that conflicts with their own?
45. What unresolved promise can enter the story now?
46. What place are they unable or unwilling to revisit?
47. What opportunity would tempt them into a bad decision?
48. What question do they want another character to ask?
49. What answer would surprise even them?
50. What choice should the first scene force them to make?

Turn Answers into a Playable Profile

Highlight one immediate want, one costly boundary, one relationship pressure, and one contradiction. Put those four signals near the top of the profile. Keep private answers private. The profile is an invitation to collaborate, not a demand that another writer memorize your notes.
