Understanding the Tiers
Semi-literate: One to two paragraphs per reply. Third person, past tense preferred. Basic scene-setting and character reactions. This is where most roleplayers start and there is nothing wrong with staying here.
Literate: Three to five paragraphs per reply. Strong prose, internal monologue, environmental descriptions, and meaningful character development within each post. This is the sweet spot for most serious RPers.
Novella: Five-plus paragraphs, often exceeding 1,000 words per reply. Full prose-fiction quality with rich sensory detail, subtext, and literary techniques. This is collaborative novel writing disguised as roleplay.
Writing Better Openers
Your opening post sets the tone for the entire RP. Start in the middle of action or an interesting moment, not with your character waking up. Describe the environment through your character's senses. Give your partner something concrete to react to.
The Art of the Response
A good response does three things: reacts to what your partner wrote, advances the scene, and gives them something to respond to. Never write a "dead-end reply" that leaves your partner with nothing to work with. Every post should open a door.
Common Pitfalls
Avoid: controlling your partner's character (godmodding), making every scene about your character (main-character syndrome), and writing paragraphs of internal monologue that your partner's character cannot perceive or react to. Roleplay is a conversation, not a monologue.
Improving Over Time
Read fiction. Seriously. The fastest way to improve your RP writing is to read good novels and absorb how professional authors handle dialogue, pacing, and description. Then practice. Write starter posts even when you do not have a partner. Build a portfolio of your best work on your CharHaven profile.
