Use Templates For Structure, Not Identity
A starter kit should solve blank-page paralysis, not replace your character voice. Use it to generate momentum, then make deliberate changes to the details that define your OC.
Rewrite At Least Three Things
- The summary: sharpen the current tension or roleplay hook.
- The backstory: replace generic history with one event that changed them.
- The tags: add genre, mood, and relationship signals that fit your actual play goals.
That one pass is usually enough to stop a template from feeling generic.
Use CharHaven Starter Kits As A Launch Pad
The starter kit library is public, so you can browse by genre before you commit. Once you find a concept that clicks, open it in the creator and reshape the profile around your own lore, tone, and dynamics.
Keep The Hook, Change The Texture
Two players can begin with the same archetype and still end up with radically different characters if they change the worldview, loyalties, and pressure points. Keep the useful structure. Replace the defaults that do not belong to you.
