Factions are the backbone of political and social conflict in RP worlds. But too many settings have factions that feel like color-coded teams rather than living organizations.
A believable faction needs:
A core belief: Not just "we want power" but a specific worldview. "Technology will save humanity" vs "technology will destroy us" creates natural conflict without making either side evil.
Internal disagreement: No organization is monolithic. Hawks vs. doves, reformers vs. traditionalists, idealists vs. pragmatists. Internal conflict makes factions feel real and gives characters room to have complex loyalties.
A public face and a private agenda: What does the faction say it does? What does it actually do? The gap between these two creates opportunities for discovery, betrayal, and moral complexity.
Entry and exit costs: How hard is it to join? How dangerous is it to leave? These questions define how committed members are and what stakes exist for defection.
