Aethelgard's white spires are not purely decorative. Each spire houses an academy dedicated to a specific discipline of magic or scholarship. The Spire of Luminance teaches light-based healing. The Spire of Echoes specialises in divination. The Spire of Embers trains war-mages in controlled destruction. Students apply at age fourteen and spend six years in intensive study.

The Silver Throne of Aethelgard is not merely a seat of power but a sentient artefact forged from the crystallized light of the First Dawn. The throne reads the intentions of anyone who sits upon it and refuses to support rulers whose hearts contain treachery. Three would-be usurpers have been killed by the throne in recorded history.
