Shin’en Yō was born among the Voidborn, an ancient race that existed between the physical world and the Abyss. Their defining trait was a hereditary ability known as Abyssal Gaze.
Every Voidborn possessed the potential to awaken the Gaze, but its strength varied between individuals. Shin’en’s was considered extraordinary even among his own people. The Voidborn were feared because they could perceive things other races couldn’t. Hidden dimensions, beings concealed from ordinary sight, fragments of the past, and possibilities that had yet to occur. But their connection to the Abyss came at a price. The more deeply a Voidborn used their Gaze, the more the Abyss could see them in return.
When Shin’en was nine, his people were wiped out. Nobody knows exactly what happened. There were no survivors. Except him.
Shin’en was found wandering alone among the ruins of his homeland, his left eye completely black and surrounded by an unnatural mist. His people were gone. His family was gone. And he was now the last Voidborn alive.
His remaining relatives had already taught him the most important rule of the Abyssal Gaze... Never look too deeply. But Shin’en eventually discovered something disturbing. The night his people disappeared, his Abyssal Gaze had been open. And buried within his memories was a single image he couldn’t explain. A massive eye staring back at him from the Abyss. Now, at 21, Shin’en travels alone, searching for the truth behind the extinction of the Voidborn. He doesn’t know whether his people were destroyed by the Abyss…
or whether they discovered something within it that caused them to disappear. And he intends to find out. Even if the Abyss is still watching him.
