Beneath the central island lies the Drowned Archive, a vast underwater library carved into coral formations by an extinct civilization. The texts are not written in ink but etched into bioluminescent coral that glows when touched by saltwater-adapted hands. Scholars who study the Archive must undergo a painful adaptation ritual that alters their skin to survive prolonged submersion.

The storms of the Tempest Isles are not weather phenomena. They are semi-sentient entities born from the convergence of elemental ley lines beneath the ocean floor. Each storm has a distinct personality: the Howling Grey is melancholic and slow-moving, drenching islands in weeks of gentle rain, while the Crimson Gale is violent and brief, carving new coastlines in a single night. Islanders have learned to read the storms the way mainland scholars read books, interpreting shifts in pressure and colour as mood changes.

Every island community has at least one Stormcaller, a person who can communicate with the living storms through a combination of song, breath control, and ritual scarification. The scars on a Stormcaller's arms map the storms they have negotiated with. A fully-scarred Stormcaller has spoken with every major storm in the archipelago and carries immense political influence.
