Three thousand years ago, a war between elementalist factions devastated the continent. The Verdant Compact was the peace agreement that ended the conflict, but it was not written on paper. The treaty terms were encoded into a grove of ancient oaks that still stands at the heart of the largest forest. As long as the oaks live, the terms of the compact are enforced by ambient magic.

Verdancy's forests are not forests at all. Each tree is a living rune, its branches and roots forming three-dimensional magical inscriptions that channel ambient mana through the ecosystem. A single tree might encode a warming spell that keeps the surrounding area temperate year-round. The druids who tend the Runegroves do not cast spells in the traditional sense. Instead, they prune, graft, and transplant trees to modify the enchantments.
